Here are 15 of our favorite, best smelling essential oil recipes and diffuser blends that you don’t want to miss! Make your home healthy, smell great and clean the air with these essential oils recipes.
I’ve long been a candle addict. There’s nothing like lit candles, good music, and the ambiance it creates for a relaxing evening at home.
And while I haven’t completely kicked the candle habit to the curb, I’m being wiser about my choices for the more occasional lighting of only soy or beeswax while avoiding the paraffin (toxin releasing) candles. But an even better option for helping your home smell amazing, which I pretty much use all day long while at home are our essential oil diffusers.
Definitely a new kind of addiction. Another plus? It’s elicited more, “Wow, it smells great in here,” comments from guests than my mix of candles ever did!
In our home, we have cold-air or ultrasonic diffusers since it allows us to enjoy all the benefits of essential oil recipes–not just the scent. Unlike warmers, a cold-air diffuser doesn’t heat the oil, so all of the therapeutic benefits of essential oils remain intact as the properties of the oil aren’t broken down.
In fact, the benefits of diffusing essential oils into the air are one of the main reasons I’m loving these essential oil recipes.
When you apply heat to essential oils, many studies show it can actually denature many of the most important chemicals and compounds, so you are essentially just diffusing the oils for scent, and not for the beneficial aspects.
This reason alone makes it important to choose the right diffuser and my advice to reap all of the benefits of essential oils is to stick with a cold-air, nebulizing, or ultrasonic diffuser.
I DO keep a little plugin diffuser in my car, although that one does heat up, so I know I’m getting the calming benefits of the scents, but I may be losing out on some of the other aromatherapy effects.
We’ve been having so much fun experimenting with recipes for our diffusers, and I’m sharing some of our favorite essential oil recipes today!
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with diffusing a single oil, as I love just using some oils on their own, but mixing them together to create great scents or benefits for the home opens up a whole new world.

Christina says
Love these recipes! Thanks so much for publishing them. I was wondering, when mention putting the oils on your feet, do you need to mix them in a carrier oil first or can you just put the oils on your feet straight from the bottle?
Tabitha Laboy says
For young kids it’s recommended to always dilute with a carrier oil, but for most of us, it’s fine to apply neat (or without diluting with an oil) to the bottom of feat! It’s also one of the best places to apply an oil when you don’t need it on a specific symptom area. 🙂
ETERIKA says
Dear Annie,
Thank you for sharing this valuable information with us. The recipies are great! I will continue follow your blog.
Rose says
As a general rule always mix your essential oils with a carrier oil before applying them to your body!!! There are VERY FEW exceptions to this rule and many company’s out there will lead you to believe it safe and even teach their sales people that it is. Essential Oils even though they are natural are still chemical cocktails and can cause injury and irritation when not used properly. So if you are not a trained Aroma-therapist then always dilute to be safe.

Wow, that’s a lovely and helpful post. The recipes: Get focused, Be Happy, Sleepytime are really what I want. Diffusing a single oil is great, but for me diffusing the mix of oils may be better. Thank you very much!

Thank you Leia!!! Yes, I agree, blends are what I love to create! There’s one I’ve been LOVING lately and we call it the jet lag blend because it really helps to calm our minds and yet give a boost for the day… Lavender, Grapefruit and Lime, it’s so good! 🙂

Kathleen says
Thanks for these great recipes, Annie! I am looking forward to trying them! I have a question for you…I have read that using citrus oils in diffusers “gums up the works”. Do you have any specific suggestions for keeping the diffuser clean when using citrus?
Tabitha Laboy says
Oh you’re so welcome!! I LOVE diffusing citrus oils, some of my favorites! I’ve never had an issue with our diffusers that way… but to clean them, fill it with half vinegar and half tap water and let it run a few hours. You can put it outside or in the garage or in a room you’re not using if you don’t like the scent 😉 Then in the morning or whenever you’re done, just wipe clean!! It keeps them running fresh! Hope that helps 😉
Kathleen says
Thanks so much!

Christina F says
Don’t mind if I do 🙂 Thanks again!
Kristi says
New to the EO, so I was wondering if I have 2 or 3 diffusers in my home do I use the same blend in each at same time?
Tabitha Laboy says
Hi Kristi! I wouldn’t necessarily run all at the same time with different blends as it could just be too much for your sense of smell, unless they are in different rooms and you won’t notice the scent from another room. I do have one in my bedroom and another in my kitchen area and almost always have different blends in them, although usually they aren’t running simultaneously since I’m not in both of the rooms at the same time. I also have one in the kids room where I’ll run some soothing blends in there for a little while before they go to sleep 🙂
Christina says
When you say cinnamon, do you mean cinnamon bark or cinnamon cassia?
Do you have a suggestion for when you want to diffuse 1 smell in the morning and 1 in the evening? I don’t want to waste any oil, but will want an energizing one before work/school and a relaxing one in the evening.
Thanks!
Tabitha Laboy says
Hi Christina!
I use Cinnamon Bark from Spark Naturals. I’m sure you could use either one, that is just the one I use. Also, make sure to get a good quality oil since diffusing the oil gets the particles and benefits into the air in your home and air you breathe. I also love to change up what I diffuse throughout the day! You can either use more than one diffuser so that you can let it run until the water/oil is gone, or just try not filling it all the way and using less oil so it can run for a shorter amount of time. That way, you’re not dumping out anything to change what oils you use. I usually let my diffusers run until what I have in the “tank” is gone and then I change what blend I’m using 🙂
Lois says
I will definitely bookmark it. Very useful!
Tabitha Laboy says
Thank you!
Chiro says
All the doctors ever wanted to do was give me steroid sprays, and tell me to use my inhaler. I decided enough was enough! I starting learning about essential oils and the benefits on both health and getting well sooner after sicknesses.
Tabitha Laboy says
That’s so great to hear that you found a path to a healthier life!! Love that.
Carrie A Groff says
How many drops of each oil do you know to use in making these blends? My diffuser holds 300 ml of water, does it matter how much water is in your diffuser…like is there an oil to water ratio to figure this out?
Tabitha Laboy says
I would start with about 5 drops of oil for your diffuser (for most) depending on room size and the strength of the oil… then can add more. 10 drops for a large room. So for a recipe with 3 different oils, I usually start with 1-2 drops of each and see how that goes. I can always turn it off and add more if I feel it can be stronger, and I’ll usually end up a little stronger in our main living space for example. In my room, I get away with closer to one drop of each oil since it’s a smaller room. Again you can always add more, but start small. 🙂
Lisa says
Ah, citrus fresh. Anything citrus-y is one of the best there is! What do you recommend though for the winter?
Tabitha Laboy says
Hi Lisa!!! I have a post of Fall diffuser recipes that will take you all through winter as well: https://freshmommy.life/top-10-fall-essential-oil-recipes-for-your-diffuser/
Although, sometimes I just really like Peppermint, Lavender and Grapefruit together (I call it a jet-lag blend) or using eucalyptus to keep us and our home healthy through the colder season. 🙂 Hope that helps!!

This is such a nice post with great combination of oils. I have always been looking for the refreshing spray recipe used by most of the hotels in summer time, its super cooling and refreshing and instantly gives a boost to our tired senses. I tried your summer time combination and was totally blown, simply can’t thank you more.
Tabitha Laboy says
Well thank you so much!!!!! If you love any of the diffuser combinations, you can easily make a spray from them too… or any oil mix. Just add the oils you want, some distilled water and sea salt to a small spray bottle. You can see more how to make it here: https://freshmommy.life/bedtime-linen-spray/
Then just use the oils you want! 🙂
Kimberly says
Dear Annie thank you for these great recipes. I just have one question its a bit off topic. I want to be able to use the best possible unit to diffuse the Essential Oils. Which one would you recommend is best? I have been using ultrasonic ones but am thinking of about upgrading to either a vaporizer from http://www.herbalizer.com/ or a nebulizer from https://richaroms.com ? What I want to know is which technique of diffusion breaks the particles down to a state where our bodies can absorb them better?
Jane Vu says
OMG, you have the best essential oil recipes for all the blogs I have been crawled. I tried and could not find any single blend that I don’t like, just like, love and love more. Looking forward to some more, Laboy <3.
Emily T. says
Love my EOs! I am working on my Aromatherapy cert now and then moving on to get my masters in aromatherapy and what you said is spot on about the dilution… I would never buy something diluted for me.. it all depends on the usage and what percentage you dilute it. great info as usual Megan!
Tabitha Laboy says
Thanks so much Emily!! So exciting that you’re working on your certificate and masters!!! That is awesome. We definitely love our EOs… I’m sure I could learn a thing or two from you 😉

This is such a decent post with awesome blend of oils. I have dependably been searching for the invigorating shower formula utilized by the vast majority of the lodgings in mid year, its super cooling and reviving and in a split second gives a support to our drained faculties.
Sue says
First, thank you so much for posting these blends! I am so eager to try them. May I ask though – how does the size of your diffuser (and it’s water capacity) matter to the oil amounts in each ‘recipe’? For instance, my daughter has a smaller diffuser than me. Her’s holds a total of 120 ml. Mine on the other hand holds up to 300 ml. I almost never fill it to capacity with water, but it did start me wondering what water amount these blends were based upon.
Thanks!!
Tabitha Laboy says
The great thing about these recipes, is that you can experiment and change them based on what you like! So if you start with the recipe, but find you need more, you can add in more! My diffusers are all mid-size and hold between 100-150 ml of water. These recipes are based on that size (most home diffusers are similar in size). You can still use these recipes with yours! If you find you need to add more oil since you’re adding more water, add in a few extra drops of each and see how that does for you. Sometimes in a large open space I find that I need to add in a little more myself. 😉 Hope that helps… have you tried any yet?? I’d love to hear which ones you like!
Susan says
Wow this is a comprehensive list. Will start to try them. Thanks for the great post.
