Sweet and Whimsical DIY Painted Planter Tutorial
You may have spotted different kinds of planters across our home, even though I’m really not great at keeping greens alive in our home.
Thankfully succulents are known for being fairly easy and low maintenance, which makes them a perfect gift!
With a simple DIY painted planter (and I really do mean simple, but cute!) and a free printable, it will be a gift that will last long past chocolates being devoured or cut florals nodding off.
While there are so many cute mini planters around, it’s was really easy and also surprisingly affordable to buy up a handful of terra cotta pots (under $.75/each at Home Depot!). Here’s the simple how-to for a perfectly sweet Valentine’s Day DIY Painted Planter Gift…
1) With flat white paint, color block the top of your DIY painted pots.
I liked the organic look and didn’t use tape to make the perfect line, I just made sure it was smooth with long strokes of the brush. For this, you can use craft paint or house paint
2) To add a little whimsy, use puffy paint to add details to the pots if desired.
I left a handful of the pots blank as I loved the simple terra cotta and white color-blocked look and added the eyes to one pot for a whimsical face.
3) Add your succulents to your DIY painted planter.
I didn’t even transplant them, the small black pots that the succulents came in from Home Depot fit perfectly within the DIY painted planter. This makes it easier to switch things around if needed later on as well.
4) For gifting, download and print our Valentine’s Day tags!
Cut out the FREE Valentine’s Day tags (I used a 2″ circle punch, or just cut by hand) and attach them to skewers with washi tape or glue. Then, stick your tags right into the dirt!
Voilà! A gift that you’ll feel really good about giving… and I’d recommend making one for yourself too because I’m pretty sure it will be hard to part with them all, they’re just too cute!
Let me know if you give these planters a try! I’d love to see how you use them.
They would make really great party favors for a small shower or brunch as well, and of course, the painting can be customized to fit your decor or event.
