Whether it’s sweater weather or you’re slipping into strappy sandals, you don’t have to wait for a special holiday to wear a bold lip. In fact I live by the theory that there is ALWAYS a reason to rock a bold lip.
Just a quick swipe through my Instagram page, or a thumb through my lipstick collection and you’ll see that a bold red lip color is a favorite of mine. Though it didn’t always used to be that way.
I can still totally get on board with a golden glow and natural lip (and do often) but there’s just something about a pop of color that makes me smile. It can pull a look together, even when you haven’t done much else (I mean a bun, mascara and red lip can look SO chic… and how easy is that?! PERFECT for a dirty hair day; shhh.).
You see, we women don’t need lipstick to make us feel beautiful, not at all, but sometimes we just need an avenue to bring us out of our comfort zone. A place for confidence to stem and bloom.
Bold lipstick can truly help you feel more powerful and confident, and automatically brightens your face, making you look more awake. Yep, you heard me right… it’ll liven you right up making you look more awake! So try that with your side of coffee in the morning, beautiful.
Even if you’re feeling a little intimidated by a bold lip, let me tell you, EVERYONE can rock it. It may take a moment for you to feel powerful in a bold lip because it’s pulling you out of a comfort zone… but I’m going to say it again. YOU totally can master the art of a bold lip!

Are you ready? Here are 5 steps to master a bold lip:
1. Invigorate Your Smile
The first step to master a bold lip is to make sure your pearly whites are just that, pearly and white. We’ll be drawing attention to our mouth with a bold lip, and everyone looks great in a white smile – so let’s make sure it is!
My family has been using Crest for awhile now, and so I was thrilled when they asked me to try a better way to charcoal with their new Crest 3D White Whitening Therapy with Charcoal, which is now available at Target, so mamas – toss it in your cart on your next shopping trip!
We all know that charcoal has been a craze in the beauty world for awhile now, and honestly, I’ve used it in SO many ways, but have been scared to try charcoal for teeth whitening. Have you seen those videos of a mouth full of darkness?! The unfortunate part of brushing with charcoal is the huge mess it can leave behind in your sink, on your nails and, most importantly, in your mouth. Plus, I’m huge on how things taste and super sensitive to that, so…
Using charcoal in the mouth is one thing I haven’t done – until now. Crest 3D White Whitening Therapy with Charcoal is formulated and striped with Charcoal and a fresh, minty flavor. When combined, the foam is grey and lightens as you brush, whitening surface stains and strengthening enamel for a brighter, cleaner smile.
After using for a couple of weeks now, I’m seeing that brighter smile, though right away I loved the refreshing mint and clean feel… especially without having a Charcoal mess left in my shiny new bathroom – just the benefits.
After I’ve got a brighter smile, I make sure to prep the lips! Using a
towel or lip scrub to exfoliate the lips and leave a clean canvas is an
important base for a bold lip, so the color can go on smoother. Hydrated lips will keep your lips from cracking and help color stay in place as well. If you’ve got makeup to apply, condition your lips and let it soak in before you add color. Then when it’s time for your bold color choice, you can remove any excess moisturizer before you apply. I don’t always line the lips, but with a bold lip color, I suggest defining the lips first. I like to start with the bottom lip, and work from the center out. For a longer-lasting color, you can also fill in the lip with the liner before applying lip color. My first true dab into a bold red lip was when I started working as a
spokesmodel for a major car company. The logo was red and so that was the color
we wore. The makeup artist there showed me this trick and I’ve used it ever
since when I truly want lip color to last – and a great way to wear a bold lip,
because fading never looks crisp and clean. After applying your lip color, use a tissue and place it between your lips to blot and allow the color to set. Then apply another layer of your lip color. Easy-peasy. If you need to clean up the line around your mouth, you can use a flat concealer brush to trace, but I don’t typically need this step. Now, it’s all about showing off that bold lip and great smile, hopefully sparking your outer confidence too.2. Preparation

Your lips and teeth both stand out and look so good. I generally only use lipstick when I go out but your method seems great for going out on a special night.

Taking care of our teeth and gums is always important. I personally don’t do bold lips. Your instructions are easy to follow for those who want bold lips.

I used to wear lipstick like this to work when I was young working in an office but now that I’m older I only wear it on special occasions. Also I wear more subtle colors that don’t look harsh with my complexion. The bright red looks great on young women such as yourself.

Thank you for these tips. I still have to practice more in lining the lips because I just always use lipstick and lip gloss.

Love your red color lipstick I haven’t done bold color lipstick. I remember my grandma used to clean her teeth with charcoal. Now I am seeing it in the form or tooth paste.
