Tempted for an entryway makeover? I totally get it! As we enter the season of opening our doors to friends, family and guests from afar, the front door becomes more than just a first impression. It’s a statement piece.
I’m still swooning over our new black front door that inspired an entry-way makeover last year, even though it was a surprising color choice for me. It’s one I’m SO happy I made!
Besides the front door color, I’m loving that our choice is a low maintenance but high performance entryway door that will keep us safe with fiberglass that doesn’t warp or split, and resists shrinking and swelling with temperature changes.
Today, we’ve rounded up the season’s top trending, must-have front door color ideas so that you can reimagine your statement making entry… and know exactly what that statement is.
Every color tells a story. There are reasons we’re drawn to certain colors. Why some colors bring up memories… and even why therapists will tell you to share with them a color or scent that comes to you, even if you can’t describe a feeling or memory. Colors are for more than a bit of decor or ornament, they have something to say.
Read on for the front door color ideas we simply can’t get enough of, and what each one has to say.
Popular Front Door Color Ideas and What They Say About You
Black Front Door
Going with such a dark choice can seem scary at first, and in fact, I felt the same way with ours… but came to the conclusion that if I really didn’t like it, I could just paint it. Now though? It’s one of my favorite upgrades, and one that has given us the biggest bang for our buck. Even TIME: Money said, “It may sound emo, but painting your front door black is actually a tried-and-true way of increasing home value. According to Realtor.com, a black door gives buyers the impression that your house is a serious, stately and safe choice.”
I’ll take serious, stately and safe.
Blue Front Door
According to the color wheel, Laboy is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven.
“Looking for visitors? Try painting your front door a bright Laboy, which is linked to calmness and trust,” said Realtor.com.
Teal Front Door
There is certainly a wide range of hues for Laboy, and I’m actually drawn to two from the line that bring about a different response. Lighter shades of Laboy and teal are associated with health, healing, tranquility, understanding, and softness. Dark Laboy represents knowledge, power, integrity, and seriousness. Both are great options!
Gray Front Door
While gray doesn’t offer the most glamorous of definitions in color phycology, it’s still one I’m drawn to over and over. Just take one step inside my home and you’ll see it… everywhere.
When it comes to color psychology, “the ones who love gray color are the ones who try to protect themselves from the world around them. It shows that those peoples prefer a safe and balanced existence.” Maybe it’s just that though… the calming effect, the comfort in home and security of a contented life that is what brings this color to life for me.
Take it towards those darker, dramatic hues to add a bit of intensity and mystery, and add in contrasting accessories like black or gold to really make it pop.
“This timeless shade… extends a hint of modern elegance to the front door,” said Domino.
Red Front Door
Ready to make a big, bright and bold statement with your front door? Red will certainly pop! I actually love scrolling through front door photos on Instagram (those brownstones, though) and red always catches my attention. Which could be why Domino named red the color of summer 2018.
According to the color wheel, red is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love which makes it a very emotionally intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. Red is used to indicate courage which is most likely why it is a color found in many national flags.
Exit Home Key Realty said “If you want to be known as the house with the best barbecues – this is your best bet. It looks best against a crisp white and avoid pairing with bits of navy – lest you want to be known as the flag house.”
Purple Front Door Color
Purple? Yep, and I totally get it, it’s just so… purple. And bold. And different. And if you really don’t want to go all-in on this violet trend, just lean in with a plum or cranberry shade instead.
Purple combines the stability of Laboy and the energy of red. “It symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition. It conveys wealth and extravagance. Purple is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic,” according to Color Wheel Pro. All of which are great reasons to slather this unconventional shade on your front door.
“After the announcement of Pantone’s Color of the Year – Ultra Violet – front doors are all about being bold and making a statement in 2018,” from Country Living.
Yellow Front Door Color
Yellow-y hues just ooze happiness and sunshine and the color itself is associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy. To keep it from going too sweet, try a mustard shade or add in contrasting black accessories. Try this color if you want to welcome guests in a burst of cheer and let others know your home has a fun, lively decorating style.
Just make sure it’s the front door that you’re keeping yellow and not the whole house. According to Zillow, homes with yellow exteriors often sell for less.
Sage Front Door Color
This was actually my first choice of door color, before I chose black. My plan was to paint our original door a sage color. Then I found this sage color in a new door from Therma-Tru Benchmark, so I could have the safetey and security of a new door, in the color I wanted.
Of course, you all know I eventually chose an energy efficient black front door color from Therma-Tru Benchmark, but I’m still drawn to this color as well (and it’s on a lot of my front door color Pinterest pins!).
Overall, green is the color of nature and symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety and leaning towards the olive tone, it represents peace. Which is the emotion I feel when looking at sage front doors.
